How to Make Friends Through Dance

All our students agree that Access Ballroom has a special welcoming and warm atmosphere in our community which makes it easy to make friends through dance. Follow our tips below so you will find dance friends, lifetime friends, dance partners, loves and just a friendly community of like-minded people.

Tip #1: Attend Classes

While attending private lessons at Access Ballroom you unlock exclusive students-only access to UNLIMITED group classes! Now that is a deal and a half!

If you are new to ballroom dancing, attending a group class can be a great way to meet people who are just as new to the activity as you are. This will help you to feel more comfortable and at ease as you learn the steps and routines. Additionally, many of the people you meet in these classes will become your friends as you progress together.

If you already have dance experience but new to our studio, you will still get to meet plenty of people in group classes of your level.

In the group classes, we constantly rotate partners so you have an opportunity to improve at a faster rate while dancing with different people.

What to Do Exactly to Make Friends Through Dance:

  1. Introduce yourself every time you switch partners. For example, “Hi, my name is John!”
  2. And do not be shy to ask for the person’s name again if you forgot it.
  3. Smile! It goes a long way and makes you more approachable.
  4. Look at your dance partner (unless it’s a smooth dance!)
  5. Thank your dance partner at the end of the dance. A simple “Thank you” is great and will help you build a connection.
  6. Arrive early before class and stay feel free to stay afterwards to find practice buddies. Simply ask, “Hey, would you like to take a couple of minutes to practice together what we’ve learned?”

Havana Night – Social Dance Party

Tip #2: Attend Social Dance Parties

Socials are one of the best ways to make friends and meet new people! For example, at Access Ballroom we host dance parties every other month to provide the opportunity for everyone to practice, socialize, get inspired by the performances, and have fun.

What to Do Exactly to Make Friends Through Dance:

  1. Similarly to the group classes, make sure you always introduce yourself and also thank each person for the dance.
  2. Social Dance Etiquette: We are past 1800s so it is okay to ask a guy to dance. Not only guys have to be the ones to ask!
  3. A simple “Would you like to dance?” will do!
  4. It is generally considered rude to say no to a dance invitation in the social dance scene. Everyone is here to have a great time. Besides, it take some vulnerability to ask someone to dance, as you put yourself out there, so it’s not cool to say “no” when you came to a SOCIAL dance event.
  5. Socialize! Ask open-ended questions. How did you learn about this party? How long have you been taking dance lessons? What are your favourite dance styles? How are you enjoying the party? Is it your first time to a social dance event?

Tip #3: Students Appreciation Day and other Outings

Studio special events and outings are a great way meet new people who share your interest in dance. Making an effort to participate in group activities will give you an opportunity to meet other dancers, practice your skills, and exchange tips and stories. These activities also provide a friendly and welcoming environment where you can socialize with other people who share your passion for ballroom dancing.

Students Appreciation Day BBQ

For example, a great way to connect and make friends is Access Ballroom’s Students Appreciation Day! We organize a complimentary summer BBQ in a park and invite all our active students (must be currently taking dance lessons) as a fun way to appreciate them. Home-made burgers and other treats, outdoor games, dance class and social dancing – all of these things are another opportunity to interact with like-minded people and become a part of the community.

Dance Competitions

Another opportunity to meet people and hang out outside of the studio is dance competitions. Whether you are the one shining on the dance floor or you are attending a competition to support your peers – you will definitely have a great time connecting with everyone.
