What is Kizomba?
Kizomba is a product of evolution. It denotes a dance form as well as a musical genre.
Kizomba is a Kimbundu word from Angola that means “party.” Within the Bantu ethnic group of Angola, Kimbundu is one of the most widely used languages. In the 1950s, the Angolan phrase “kizombadas” referred to a large gathering; nevertheless, neither the dance nor the music as we know it now were associated with it.
At that time, popular traditional dances included Semba, Kabetula, Kasukuta, Maringa, Caduque, Rebita, Cidralia, and Dizanda.
Carnaval dances make up the majority of these dances. Almost all of these dances may be seen one by one at the “Carnaval da Victoria” in Luanda, the capital of Angola.
The History Of Kizomba
The Kizomba and Semba dances are very similar to one another in Angola. But Kizomba and Semba are completely dissimilar musically and in terms of their evolution.
In Angola, Portugal, and Cape Verde, Kizomba dancing has a long history. However, it has also expanded to a wide range of other nations, including Canada, the US, France, Egypt, Switzerland, Serbia, Spain, England, Poland, Denmark, Belgium, Sweden, Byelorussia, and Lithuania.
History of Kizomba Music
Following the influences of indigenous Semba music (the forerunner of Samba from Brazil) and Zouk music from the group Kassav from the French Caribbean Island of Guadeloupe, Kizomba music was created in Angola (in Luanda) in the 1980s.
Kizomba music developed as a more contemporary music genre with an African rhythm and sensual touch as a result.
Kizomba music, in contrast to Semba, has a slower and frequently highly romantic pace. The majority of Kizomba songs are performed in Portuguese because Angola was formerly a Portuguese colony and Portuguese is the primary language there.
