History of Viennese Waltz

Painting by Vladimir Pervuninsky
The Viennese Waltz, also known as the rotary Waltz or the Strauss waltz, originated in Vienna. The exact time when it originated is not known. However, based on Goethe’s comments, it seems that it was the 1700’s, or 1750’s to be more exact.
Before the upper-class society took up Viennese Waltz, it was, in fact, popular among the common folk.
Interestingly, Waltz meant a fast Waltz (or Viennese Waltz) before the first World War, unless specified otherwise. Then closer to 1930’s Waltz started to signify the Slow Waltz (learn how to do the basics here), whereas the fast Waltz got renamed the Viennese Waltz giving credit to its place of origin.
To this date, Viennese Waltz is popular in Vienna (where you can even attend special balls for Viennese Waltz) as well as all over the world.
Viennese Waltz Music
Music in 3/4 time goes back at least as far as Das Lied vom Lieben Augustin, written in 1679. You can find more contemporary and classic examples of Viennese Waltz music here.
How to Dance the Viennese Waltz
The Viennese Waltz is a dance style where partners almost constantly rotate while also going around the room. They either rotate clockwise (right turn or natural turn) or counter-clockwise (left turn). In the American Style, Viennese Walts dancers have a lot of freedom in terms of the dance positions and steps, as they can do not only the closed hold but also open hold, various turns, and separations, etc.
